Research in design means exploring and shaping the relationship between people and artefacts and their interactions (past, present and future).

According to Christopher Frayling and Wolfgang Jonas, design research can take place in the categories about, for and through design. When we research design, for example, we do so in the categories of design history, design criticism or aesthetics etc.. In doing so, we have a view of design, so to speak.

Research for design means research that produces knowledge relevant to design, such as materials research, etc. ‘Research through design’ or design as research refers to the type of research that conducts research through design itself, i.e. the designed artefact is the result of the research because it contains implicit knowledge - in other words, research is conducted through the medium of design.
